Master Craftspeople of Helsinki: Who Teaches the Workshops

·6 min read

🇫🇮 Suomeksi: Mestarit esiin: Suomen käsityöpajojen uusi sukupolvi

Most craft workshop services hide their teachers behind generic language: "professional artisans", "facilitators", "our team". We do not. Every Elven Crafts workshop is taught by a named master, and every page on the site tells you who is teaching, where they work, and what they specialise in.

This is a short introduction to the four masters teaching Elven Crafts workshops in Helsinki and the wider capital region through 2026, plus the reason we think naming them matters.

Maria Sol — chainmail and bead jewellery

Maria Sol founded Elven Crafts as a chainmail studio in Helsinki and grew it into a workshop platform. Her own craft is chainmail: small metal rings hand-woven into earrings, necklaces, bracelets and headpieces, ring by ring. Read more in the European 4-in-1 weave guide.

Maria's workshops fall along two axes: chainmail (which suits engineering teams and boho-aesthetic hen parties) and bead jewellery (relaxed, social, beginner-friendly). Bead jewellery is a popular choice for tiimipäivät where the brief is "something everyone enjoys".

Coverage: Helsinki and Espoo as a default. Visits Copenhagen on rotation for larger bookings.

Valo R. — candle making

Valo R. runs the Elven Crafts candle workshops (kynttiläpaja Helsinki) across Helsinki and Espoo. Their specialisation is natural wax and scent blending. Sessions run calmer than the jewellery ones; the pace suits smaller groups and tends to draw particular interest for end-of-year and pre-Christmas workplace events.

A typical Valo session runs 2 hours. Each participant chooses a scent blend and pours their own candle, finishing by taking it home. Valo is a working artisan in their own right — teaching is part of their craft practice, not a side activity.

Patrik — chainmail, from Copenhagen

Patrik is the Copenhagen-based chainmail master who visits the Helsinki capital region on rotation. He handles Danish bookings (polterabend, julefrokost, firmaarrangement) and visits Helsinki when group sizes grow past what one master can hold — typically 20+ people. Then he and Maria run parallel tables.

Patrik works closely with Maria; many of the larger workshops are essentially one event with two masters visible at once.

Our analog photography master (full profile in June)

We onboarded an analog photography master in early 2026 for small-group film and pinhole sessions. Their full name and background will appear on a dedicated profile page in June, once the first Helsinki bookings are in. Boutique workshops only; group sizes deliberately small.

Why naming matters

Anonymising the artisan is the easy path: the platform offers a service, the craftsperson stays in the background. We chose otherwise, for three reasons.

  • Trust. When you book a master-led workshop, you are buying that master's skill and time. You are not buying a generic "workshop experience". The booking confirmation should reflect that.
  • Accountability.Names mean accountability. A master's reputation travels with their work.
  • Recognition. Craftspeople do real work. Their names deserve to be visible.

Master onboarding 2026

Through 2026 we are bringing on additional masters: a ceramics master in Helsinki or Espoo, a painting master in Helsinki, and a Nordic-cooking chef in Copenhagen. If you are a craftsperson and interested, read Join as a master.

How to book a master

The easiest path is the booking inquiry form. Give us your group size, date, and craft preference — we match the master accordingly. If you want a specific master (Maria for bead jewellery, Valo for candle making, Patrik for chainmail in Copenhagen), mention it in the additional notes.
